Before you perform anything on a crashed hard drive, you need to remove it from the current machine and connect to another computer as a secondary drive. The best way to do this to get a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. The USB adapter comes in handy when you want to connect a hard drive to another machine. Once you have an adapter, connect the crashed hard drive to the USB adapter and slave it with the second machine, this will allow you to read the files and copy them to a working partition.
